third post of the week...

You all can ignore this. I'm just trying to make my weekly quota.

I'm still feeling rather blah about The Novel. Whatever my subconcious is working on is sure taking a long time to thrash/hash/smash out. I wish it would hurry. I have a marathon to participate in here. In the meantime, I've written another short story. That makes three in about as many weeks. All totally different in regards ideas, settings, characters, and tone, but none of them make me oh-so-happy with my writing, or more specifically with my creativity. Still, I'm trying. That has to count for something.

It totally counts for something! You're working different muscles whil eth eother ones rest.

It counts.

Writing is a bit bunch of really little skills that intertwine together. It's okay to focus on one little skill and eschew the others for the time being.

It's a Flylady (http://www.flylady.net/) type of mentality. It's okay to take all the dirty dishes out of your sink, pile them on the counter, then shine your sink. It doesn't matter that the dishes haven't been done. The only thing that matters is that your sink is shiny.

It's okay to focus on being able to crank out words. Disciplining yourself to be able to put down words is a good skill to learn. Being able to put down good words is a completely different skill. Don't feel you have to worry about it for the next three weeks. Master writing the words, then later you can focus on the skill of making those words good.

All writing counts - even if you'll never use them, the words you write are honing your skill. It's like sketching for artists or the daily practice for musicians.

Oh, yes, I'm definitely counting it. I'm just ready to move on from TTD. I would like to finish it so that I move on to something else, meaning another novel idea. I just don't like leaving it sitting there, unfinished.

Yeah, I think what I need to do is to use the shorts to practice a certain skill(s), but what I've been doing is just writing whatever little story comes to me. In one of them I did work on putting a few twists on some clichés of the fantasy genre, but I wasn't really concentrating on technique. (Too bad I don't think it qualifies for the March challenge.)

Maybe my next short will concentrate on a specific technique...

*wanders off to ponder*

*counts words* *sticks ALL words into word meter* Ok, maybe not all
