I'm surprised the midwife was so pessimistic about your progress, just from reading your description I would have told you you were in transition. I'm glad she decided to check you before the epidural! And that you told her you had to go to the bathroom... her nonchalance borders on negligence. She could easily have walked out, lumping you with all the other first-birth statistics, and let you give birth right there and then by yourself.
Conclusion: never ask anyone how much time you have left. They don't know and have no way of knowing. Only your body knows. :)
