Does anyone on my flist use Linux Ubuntu? If so, how do you like it? Are there any drawbacks to it that I should know about?

I use the Ubuntu-derivative LinuxMint at work. It's okay. Super-easy to install and customise. The person you should talk to about Ubuntu is [livejournal.com profile] halspacejock. I believe Simon's quite fond of Ubuntu.

Thanks. I remember you mentioning Linux before, so I thought you might know something. I just didn't expect you to still be awake. ;)

I really like Ubuntu. I was using it exclusively for most of my last two years of college. It was really the only thing that made sense when I needed to do that much programming.

Honestly the only reason I'm not using it exclusively anymore is because I never could get WINE and Office to play nicely together and between the editing with manuscripts for writing and all the Access programming I have to do for work, it wasn't worth it anymore.

But it is super userfriendly. And great to use.

Thanks, Bree!

That's very helpful. Since I don't even know what WINE is, I guess I'll be OK with it. :D

Actually WINE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine_(software)) is a delightfully self-referential acronym for "WINE Is Not an Emulator."

It's supposed to make it easy to run Windows programs in Linux, but I never had much luck getting it fully going. I didn't really take the time to try though...I was under a crunch at work and suddenly needed to be ass-deep in Access all day long, so while my computer technically can dual-boot into either Windows or Ubuntu, I live in Windows these days.

I still miss Ubuntu though.

Ah, that could interest me, then. I'll ask about it when I go in to get the new pc configured.

Thanks again.

When you get this figured out, expect cries of distress from me.

The diddy pc uses Linux but it's a mystery to me. Have not the faintest, not a clue, not smidge of an idea, not an inkling. As long as it works, I'm happy. When it stops working, I go back to default settings *g*

*lol* Well, we are planning to buy a pc with Ubuntu instead of evil Microsoft products. I'm just curious to know if it is a stable program that plays nice with others. :D So I'm prolly not the best one to ask about how to run anything. *maniacal laugh*

It sounds like it plays very nicely with others, if you know how to ask it.

Ahem. Thereby hangs a tale. (Don't mention Dropbox unless you WANT me to start gnashing my teeth....)

*Does NOT mention the D-word*

Btw, did you get the IM I sent you tonight?
