In keeping with last week's theme of sleeping and shoes, I bring you another glimpse of Mayotte. This cobbler has his shoemending shop set up in the shade of a mango tree just across the street from the market. Business is a little slow and the day is hot, so why not catnap?

Ne su’tor ultra crep’idam. (Let not the cobbler overstep his last --in other words: Let no one presume to interfere in matters of which he is ignorant.)

The tale goes that a cobbler detected a fault in the shoe-latchet of one of Apelles’ paintings, and the artist rectified the fault. The cobbler, thinking himself very wise, next ventured to criticise the legs; but Apelles answered, “Keep to your trade”—you understand about shoes, but not about anatomy. E. Cobham Brewer 1810-1897. I should say that I love your Glimpses, even though I don't often comment.

The sleeping shopkeepers especially remind me of Beijing. In the summer it was almost impossible to find anyone inside any of their shops, you had to go on a mini-trek to see if they were sleeping in the back, or the shop over watching TV with a neighbor, or somewhere among the sidewalk crowds fanning themselves and playing Chinese chess.

Sleeping and shoes - that's a pretty interesting theme you've got there!

I didn't know that mango trees also grew pairs of Doc Marten boots.... I must get one of those.

Fruit, footwear, and shade. It doesn't get better than that. :P
