The other day, while doing the dishes, I saw N'djema pouncing and trouncing on one of the rugs. She usually plays like that with cockroaches, but that is more in the evening. I ignored her for a little bit and then had the sinking feeling that she might be tormenting a gecko. But no, it wasn't a gecko; it was a Madagascan Pygmy Shrew!

The poor fellow was pretty traumatized, so we were able to get a few photos before setting him free behind the house. Because he's such a small critter (4.5cm excluding the tail), you get 3! pics. :P

I was so happy to see one alive. The only other pygmy shrew I've seen here was the one left on the threshold of our bedroom as a...ahem, present.

I know! We half-jokingly thought about keeping him for a pet, but good thing we didn't. Apparently it is very hard to keep them alive in capitivity.

My optimistic self thinks he did. He was in good form when I set him free and he found a hiding spot very quickly.

Yeah, when it was sniffing me, I kept giggling because it reminded me of an elephant trunk; so flexible!
