wayfaringwordhack: (frangipani)
Instead of walking or making the speargun sack yesterday, I went to Moya II with J to watch him surf. It's the first time I've ever gone and was able to see him catch a couple of waves, despite the conditions not being optimal for surfing. The weather is cooling off, and I didn't need to go into the water to refresh myself. Which was just as well since there have been a rash of thefts on the beaches these past few weeks. We never take anything very expensive to the beach--except sunglasses--but it's a pain to lose one's keys.

I can't stand being paranoid, but I was a little nervous when I saw a small group of Mahorais teens strutting down the beach with two dogs. As I've mentioned before, the Mahorais in general do not like dogs, but there is an increasing number of gangs who steal puppies and dogs, forming packs with which to intimidate people into turning over their purses and wallets. The boys passed me by and went further down the beach, but their dogs kept running the length of the shore, sniffing all the turtle "nests", which made me just as antsy. I could barely watch J for all the time I spent craning my neck left and right to make sure the dogs didn't find any newly-hatched turtles before I did. All the ogling I did paid off as it allowed me to spot a male/female pair of flycatchers and a dazzling kingfisher.

So, my anticipation of many accomplishments was a bit misplaced. Still, getting out and enjoying the island is something I don't do enough of. Sometimes it's best to get carried into a different flow.
