wayfaringwordhack: (writing: food for thought)
As I said in my last post, I've been traveling this week and, true to expectations, have nothing much of note to share on the creative front.

Actually, I did do a smidge of work, just enough to see that the idea of a "turn-the-page" reveal is not going to work for this project. I sketched a storyboard (well a good third of one) and could see right away that the flow I want, the general overview, won't happen unless all the images can be seen at once. The next page reveal is possible, yes, but not right for this project. So, either a publisher will say "yes, this lift/lower the flap can work for slightly older kids" or I'll have to tweak the text a bit. I don't know if I said it before, but I might just have more leeway with the younger crowd anyhow because their books are filled with "too advanced" vocabulary on a regular basis since they are not reading but being read to, whereas beginning readers often have "skill-level appropriate" (shorter words, super repetitive and stilted grammar) things to suss out on their own.

I also started sifting through my research to compile the facts in my own words, so all in all, not too bad for a week of vacation.

And speaking of kids' books, in the past month, I've gotten two really good (to me, at least) ideas for stories. It seems like my brain can handle this while parenting small children. Not difficult, I hear you say, when I'm immersed in reading to kids all the time. :P
