Yes, you nailed it very well. I don't claim to know this neighbor well, but from what I gather, he is a very feeling man, which does not mean that he can speak easily about those feelings. And what you said reminds me of this saying, "If you have livestock, you are going to have dead stock." Knowing that makes one have to take many things in one's stride without getting sunk by the misery inherent in so much of it.
