This is so fascinating to learn. When I was in Timor-Leste, I passed by a carpenter's shop where they were making a bed from scratch out of wood. I'm so used to things being mass produced, even big things like beds and sofas--but not everywhere, not always! Amazing that local labor can produce a knock-off that is cheaper than a mass-produced thing. (Although I do see that you note in the footnotes that you could get a cheaper premade thing in really local stores--just for very dodgy quality. That is what our current sofa is! But next time we buy a sofa, we will go up a step ;-) )
