During the holiday season, I want to post a series of pictures of the Mahorais with an emphasis on our friends and their families. These are people we see pretty much on a daily basis and who are our biggest touchstone with the culture (which is Comorian and Malagasy rather than strictly something unique to Mayotte).

Faïza Marie, daughter of Sakina. A year ago, she was just a babe in arms. Now she is walking all over the place and trying to prove that her older sister, Florine, didn't get the entirity of the trouble-making gene...

She's such a sweetie, but you see from her smile and the glimmer in her eye that she's going to be a handful. Just today, as I was coming home from my walk, she started squealing and waddling towards me, chubby arms outstretched and a "You know you want to hold me and give me goodies" grin plastered across her face. I went to scoop her up, but an older girl informed me that her nappy was full and holding her probably wasn't the best idea. :-P
