Down but not out

So, the files are still on the HD, and, according to the trial versions of some data recovery software, still in good condition. Nothing appears to be lost, but I haven't decided which program to use to get them back. Not all of the programs recognize the external HD, but File Scavenger does. I think that's the one I'll go with. Just not right now. Recovering, sorting, and saving the files to other media is going to take so much time, something I just don't have right now.

I'm just relieved to know that the files are there when I'm ready to get them.

In the meantime, since we had to take the new pc back, J has been looking at replacements. He's leaning toward an Apple (laptop.) Any recs from you Apple users out there? (He mostly needs it for work on his videos and obviously image treatment is impt to both of us. I need a computer that allows me to write.)

On a completely unrelated note, I had a terrible dream that one of my English students (Oh, I have three now and just forgot to tell you) died with his parents. Gas leak. They shared a house with us, and J and I weren't home at the time. J's the one who found them first, all stretched out peacefully on the floor.  I woke up in tears when I realized (in that still asleep way) that it was Wednesday, and E wouldn't be coming for his lesson. :( Needless to say, I was happy to greet the real world. However, bad dreams or not, he's not getting out of his test. :D

When my 6-year-old Windows machine died in 2007, I think, I was faced with buying a machine that used Vista, which I'd heard such miserable things about, or a Mac.

I am happy to report that my MacBook is behaving beautifully, has a gorgeous display, has already traveled with me to San Jose, Nashville, Blacksburg and Minneapolis with nary a bobble, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. iPhoto has this neat tagging system that lets you organize your photos into albums and photo montages that automatically play to your choice of music. Microsoft Office for Windows uses most of the same key combinations I'm used to, and is trainable.

The most difficult things in adapting from Windows for Mac, for me, have been knowing where to go in the operating system to tweak things and figuring out the Mac-specific key strokes. There's another key on the keyboard, the flower key (I think the official name is something like Command key, but once you see it you'll understand why I call it something else *g*). Both of those are something I am adapting to with the assistance of a series of application-books called The Missing Manual - there's one specifically for Windows users converting to Mac that explains where things like the Mac version of Control Panel are and how to work them.

Long and short, I'm a Mac person now - and my husband, seeing mine in operation while his Windows machine limps along, is swearing his next computer will be a Mac.

I think the initial price tag of a Mac is hard to swallow, but the consensus is that they are good machines and worth the cost and peace of mind they give. The Manual sounds like a good thing to have. Just a few days on Linux was enough to make me realize how Windows trained I am.

And yeah, scary dreams suck. I'm happy to report that E came to his lesson, safe and hale, as was his father who brought him. J told them to be careful around gas. :D

I love my macs - and if you get a mac I recommend you get scrivener for writing - cheap and awesome.

I currently have a mac air which is honestly a pricy luxury so I don't particularly recommend it as a workhorse computer. I had a regular old macbook for a long time and found it awesome and generally suited to my needs (which were generally not hugely processor intensive.) The pros have a much better graphics card, so you might want to go with that depending on the video editing needs.

I really hate those kinds of dreams. I like dreaming and I'm glad I can remember most of mine...usually. Some of them are just better left in the murk.
