wayfaringwordhack: (maki - tasty)

 Every year, starting around the new year, bouenis set out their tiny grills, fill them with charcoal chips, and roast whole ears of corn. The smell is delicious and terribly tempting. I succumbed once, the first year we were here, and bought one.

Blughblugh.

Anyone else grow up on a farm? Anyone else ever eat field corn? You know, the kind meant for livestock? Yeah, that's what they roast and sell. Without salt or pepper or butter.  Still, I often wonder as I walk by, do I risk my 50 centimes on the chance that, this time, it might be better?

Heh. All too familiar with the field corn phenomenon, I'm afraid. Give them good corn seed, instead!

What an evocative image. . . I remember corn season, all right. Mom grew a huge patch so she could freeze corn for the winter, but when it came ripe she'd fill a couple of plates with fresh, barely steamed kernels that were supposed to be going into the freezer packages and we'd sit down with our butter and *consume*.

What a lovely memory! It reminds me of sitting out in lawn chairs--remember when they were metal, with those big shell-shaped backs?--beneath the elms, shelling peas, snapping the ends off green beans and shucking corn.

Often, when I think of settling down somewhere, my memories of the farm come back to tug at me. :)

Bwhahaha...C insisted on trying the livestock maize (corn)this autumn, despite warnings that it tastes crappy. Let's just say that now he knows better.

I have happy memories of ears of corn. My husband and I went to Carnivale in Rio for our honeymoon. Several nights we walked the Copocabana beach, dripping butter from the steamed corn we'd bought from street vendors.

Happy memories. Good corn :}
