A week or so ago, I tried to comment on a friend's entry, but LJ told me I was banned from doing so.  Thinking it a temporary quirk, I didn't say anything to my friend, but when it happened again, I asked my friend if she had banned me.  She hadn't and didn't understand what wasgoing on.

Well this morning, I happened to see that it had arbitrarily banned someone on my flist, too ([livejournal.com profile] secritcrush  -- you probably didn't realize you were banned but I fixed it now). What you do to fix it is to hover your cursor over a friend's little person icon without clicking anything. In a couple of seconds, a menu will pop up with the option "unban user." If the user isn't banned, it'll say "ban user" instead.

Stupid LJ.

ETA: Courtesy o[livejournal.com profile] frigg : There's also a "ban-unban" feature under "Friends", where you can click and see who are on your banned list. Any accidentally banned friends might show up there as well.

This happened to me once--I was banned from someone's LJ who hadn't actually banned me. Stupid LJ, indeed.

How did you discover that LJ had banned [livejournal.com profile] secritcrush? (I would hate to think that someone on my friends list might be banned and I might not know about it.)

In the wee hours, I had a horrid porn spam message on my flist from one of the writer conference communities I belong to. I figured out how to report it as a bot and did that but was too sleepy to think about going back and banning the user, the option to do so being in the same menu as reporting a bot. This morning I decided to scroll down my friend's page and see if the offensive spam was still there. My cursor just happened to stop above the little head icon on one of [livejournal.com profile] secritcrush's. I saw that it had "unban user" as an option. Having never banned her to begin with, I was a little upset to say the least. I then went through my list of friends and verified, one by one, that no one else was banned. But I don't have a huge flist and I can imagine that being pretty time-consuming for someone who does.

Turns out the only people I have banned are some trolls I actually did ban, so--phew!

Phew, indeed. I'm with you in the "oh no, what if someone thinks I banned them on purpose!?" department.

Great! Thanks so much. My sleep deprived brain can't spare the cells for looking for solutions.

That is totally irritating! I currently have no one banned and hope it stays that way.

Yeah, it sucks to think that one should periodically check to see if LJ hasn't decided to ban someone on his or her behalf.... o.O
