wayfaringwordhack: (writing: food for thought)

This week, I've been working away at the blanket. I'm now on the 6th (of 9) rows. I also finished my sketch and started applying color today. Despite my best intentions, I did not take photos while the light was good. I still have something to post though: Words!

I actually did a bit of writing this week.  Took me forever, but I got a few sentences, some of which are here below:

“What in the name of the Hexad am I doing?” he muttered, his hand tightening on the small cloth bag he carried.

“My question exactly,” said a voice near his bedroom door.

“Omusul!” Baxente whirled around, almost tripping over his walking staff. “What are you doing sneaking into my room in the middle of the night?“

“I could ask what you’re doing sneaking out of it, if I were in the habit of questioning my sovereign, that is.”

I kinda-sorta toyed with the idea of NaNo this year and then wisely, I think, decided that that would be biting off a bit more than I can chew right now. I'm just happy to be getting new words, even if I am having to force them out. Maybe they'll start coming more easily as soon as I get a bit further into the story...

My friend convinced me that NaNo is not about reaching the [arbitrary] goal, it's about the motivation to get the words flowing. So I signed up and have very vaguely set a goal of 20K words by Nov. 30th, and in the meantime, I'm enjoying the ride... I'm 7K in, up about 3K since the middle of last week, which is pretty impressive considering the circumstances! If I keep up the pace I could definitely hit 20K by the end of the month.

Yeah, I'm definitely onboard with the idea of using NaNo was motivation to write. I haven't committed to a word count nor a write-every-day goal, but perhaps I should.

3K! That is impressive! How are you feeling about the story?

Lovin' it! I'm really in the groove! Every time something comes up that I need to figure out, like an unresolved plot point or question about a character or an angle on something, the inspiration just comes within a day or so. (Usually when I'm in the shower. :P ) Still have lots of research to do, but geez, Google is awesome. I have vivid pictures in my head of the climax and important plot points, some of which I have jotted down so I don't forget later on. I daydream about the characters in my "free" time. It's awesome, I haven't been "into it" like this in like seven-eight years...

That is awesome. Even though it is not mine, I love it when others experiencing story love. :P I am struggling to get back into the flow and have been thinking about different strategies for doing so. i think I might do what you mention, that is, start writing the vivid but later-in-the-story scenes that are so clear. Maybe that will get me revved up to write what comes before.

For me it's kind of a continuation, a not-so-adult version of my childhood imaginary games. :P When I am alone, I will pretend I am one (or more!) of the characters, act out a scene, and see what comes up. Scenes develop and evolve this way, as I act it out and refine various points, and dig deeper emotionally into what is happening to the character. (I guess this is what happens when you're a writer/actress at heart...) I also do this "emotional digging" when listening to music, especially if the song has lyrics or a melody that reminds me of the story. Come to think of it, it was remembering this old Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) song that initially brought this story back to life for me and made me want to explore it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ec8W68W4o0

The lyrics are actually relevant in a poetic sort of way and I kind of wanted to incorporate it into the story, but after some research I realized that all the Ladino songs we know of come from no earlier than the 18th century; the real melodies of pre-expulsion Spanish Jews and Conversos are lost to history because they didn't have any way to record the notation. :( Well, at least it is there as inspiration...

(And I guess that's what happens when you're a writer/actress/musician at heart. LOL)

Anyway, that's how my creative process tends to work! I used to avoid "pre-writing" scenes on principle, but now I think it helps me just to get it down. I can always rewrite it or change it later. I keep them in the file with my notes instead of the file with the manuscript.
