J has to work on Thanksgiving Thursday, so I was not planning on doing anything this year. What with being sick* and not knowing many people here in Cairo for whom Thanksgiving is a big deal, I was all right with the idea of not making a fuss. The more I thought about it, though, the more I realized I didn't have to do much in order to mark the occasion.

So, we had slow-roasted duck, homemade cranberry sauce (found frozen lingonberries), cornbread dressing, and pecan pie as traditional fare, with green beans, a green salad, and roasted potatoes and garlic with a homemade baguette.  And we watched Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving just before eating.  Not to be all bah-humbug or overly-critical of "must-see" holiday movies, but that cartoon is really blah. I never cared for Chuck and his friends while I was growing up, and I see the love has not grown with me into adulthood. :P

Wishing all who celebrate (and even those who don't) and thankfilled and blessed day tomorrow.  If you do "do Thanksgiving" what is your one (or 2) absolute must eat item for it to fill like Thanksgiving to you? I once knew a boy whose family had hamburgers every Thanksgiving because none of them liked turkey and the trimmings.

* Sprout is feeling so much better. She went to bed at 4:30 p.m. yesty and slept (a bit fitfully, it's true) until 6:45 this morning. She has been herself all day, without a hint of fever.  Also got my lab results, which declared that I have not "pathogenic bacteria" and do not need antibiotics. I sure am glad I asked for a throat swab because, had I not been adamant about not wanting to take antibiotics while pregnant, the doc might have prescribed them anyhow. My throat still feels irritated, but it is nothing I can't live with.

That sounds lovely! And I'm so very relieved for the update on S. Sooo glad that fever has disappeared. And very glad you won't need antibiotics. Don't overdo it though. ((hugs))

We are much relieved in the Faure household, i can tell you. I plan on much rest and relaxation when J gets home tomorrow, or at least I hope I can. Friday is the best day to do some shopping, while most Egyptians are at worship, but, oh! I don't want to. :-

Glad you are feeling better!

We usually celebrate Thanksgiving--usually on Friday night as part of the Sabbath meal. We mark it as an opportunity to give thanks to the best Diaspora the Jews have ever had. (We sometimes celebrate July 4th for this reason as well.) But this year I ain't feelin' the American pride. I'm pretty mad at Obama about the Iran deal, particularly all the secret talks behind Israel's back leading up to it. And given that it falls out on Chanukah this year I don't feel the need to go out of my way to celebrate something else.

When we do celebrate, we keep it simple: some kind of turkey, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, maybe some stuffing. I'm not a big fan of turkey generally speaking, but Eitan makes it yummy :)

ARGH. *kicks LJ* It keeps giving me an error message when I try to post my comments. I hope they aren't going through twice.

Anyhow, I said: I'm a bad American and world citizen; I don't keep up with the news or politics, so I don't know which deal you are talking about. :(

Turkey isn't my favorite, either, so I don't miss not being able to have it.

*copies message, just in case LJ tosses it again*...which it did. Try number 3!

No Thanksgiving for us, but I'm going to try roasting some brussels sprouts for the first time. Glad to hear S is feeling better!

I really like brussel sprouts. Sadly, J does not. I do make them for myself on occasion, but it is just better being able to cook the same thing for everyone. :P

I love them (but then I do like bitter foods), but I usually boil or fry them. I've never tried roasting them before. Some of the recipes I've seen look delicious though.

I've roasted them once and liked them; even J declared them "all right." :P

There has to be a turkey. All else is negotiable.

Glad you got a sort of Thanksgiving, even if it involved a duck.

LOL. I actually prefer duck to turkey. Roasted duck is good, but give me a medium-rare grilled duck breast any day. Delicious.

We roasted a duck once, not at Thanksgiving, but later in the winter. I enjoyed it, but it made oceans of greasy fat to get rid of. I'm not sure why turkeys don't do that too, but they don't. If someone else wants to cook duck and let me eat it, that would be excellent! (Although not at Thanksgiving. I need my turkey then.)

Kudos to you for resisting the auto-prescribed antibiotics! And I'm very glad to hear Sprout is feeling better. Does she like the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving special better than you do? :)

Since I became a vegetarian, we've pretty much abandoned traditional Thanksgiving dishes. I think PIE is the only item we still insist on. We get our cozy feels from using the nice plates, tablecloth and napkins, and candles.

You know, I don't think she did. She usually asks for more of something she likes, and this time, nope, no discussion, no requests. :P

Pie, yes! Definitely pie. I usually like to decorate and create a festive atmosphere, but decor was one thing I passed on in favor of maintaining my healing health and sanity.

They are serving Turkey dinner there so K and I are going there and making gumbo on Friday. glad yall are on the mend. take care of each other. hugs and kisses from Oklahoma

Glad that Sprout is feeling better and that you don't need antibiotics!

I too prefer duck to turkey, but for Thanksgiving we always have turkey, stuffing, and Ezra's homemade cranberry sauce. For a couple years we went without stuffing, as she and I were on a wheat-free diet, but now that I've learned how to make wheat-free bread, we can have it again! And Ben is adding his specialty--cheesecake.
