Sprout on Unschooling

I don't know if I've shared before that we are planning on unschooling our kids or not, but yes, we are.

Anyhow, yesterday, we were carpooling to and from ballet and as we were approaching our building, I turned to Sprout and told her to say bye to her friend.

Sprout: I'm telling Salma about unschooling.
Me: Oh, I'm very interested to hear what you said.
Sprout (while we were climbing the stairs to our apartment): I told her it means you can do whatever you want, whenever you want.

After a good belly laugh, I gently corrected that to: LEARN whatever you want when you want to.  And yeah, you get to do a lot of stuff you want to do, just because you want to.*

And don't you know Salma must think unschooling is a pretty cool thing. :P

Cute :-) That was my impression, when I was a kid, of the free school my friends two doors down told me they attended.

There's someone I follow on Twitter who does unschooling. She tells great stories of her daughter. I'll share your entry with her!

This makes me think about how our perspective changes based not only on who is doing the explaining but where we are in terms of age and experience. :)

Unschooling is what we call home schooling here? Sounds interesting, and I'm sure you'll make a great teacher for your kids (as if you already aren't).
