wayfaringwordhack: (art - pondering)

I sketched quite a bit again this week, even though I didn't fill up pages and pages in my sketchbook. I discovered that some of my critters (and even the roosters, to be honest) did not and will not need so much time dedicated to them. So I took time out to do some technical exercises as well as create new things out bits of old art projects/scrap paper and color tests.

Behold watercolor blob fish:

The bodies of the fish are from a sample chart of watercolors I made for Sprout many years ago.  The recipe used cornflour, if memory serves, and so the paint goes on thick and chalky and chips pretty easily. I would have liked to put in my details with pens but didn't want to gunk up the nibs, so graphite it is, even though the lines don't pop as much.

The eyes of the red one look so three-dimensional (and, frankly, like they're made of strawberry jam. i want to taste them--not what I usually say when I look at fish eyes).

They're all excellent fun!

Oh, which reminds me:

Wow, those sushi fish are amazing. What a lot of work.

Have you ever eaten a fish eye? Or dissected one to find the little hard white ball inside? Very odd.

I never have! Or dissected one. I've **seen** them, up close, but that's it.

We grilled fish on the BBQ today (crazy in Jan, right?), and Junebug absolutely loved it. He kept swiping pieces, and he grabbed one of the eyes and gobbed it down. :P The ball didn't bother him.

If your life were a fairytale, he'd now have special powers to see underwater.

I've been playing with the little blobs, new and old (meaning the ones I already transformed into fish) every time I sit down at my drawing table. :P A little bit of silliness does a lot of good.
