Snippet Sunday - Intober WK 1

For the first time ever, I am participating in Inktober. This is meant to be a lowkey challenge for me, a way for me to keep it simple and just have a pen in hand again.  That is all I am using for the moment: a pen and a single sheet of paper. I still haven't decided whether or not I will do an ink wash over parts of the image. I think I will, but that decision can come later.

I'll try to remember to scan my images next time instead of using my phone to take pics.

The whole, being drawn on a 30.5 X 45.5 cm (12 X 18in) block of water color paper (in case I do decide to do an ink wash):

The most challenging thing so far? Loosening up. I started to get there toward the end of the week, I think, as seen by the suggestive lines of this top coral mass and the hinted-at fish from today's session.

Now I am the one snorting. Your drawings STAY! says the bossy pea. I really like them.

As we talked about before, this is really about each person finding their thing that they want to do and then doing it, not matter what theme or technique (well, within the bounds of ink, and even then...), just doing and having fun and improving along the way.

I enjoy your theme and the surprising directions you take it each day.

I love the angle on that fish! I love that we're seeing him from below. Were you doing the scene from memory/imagination, or were you using reference images?

I am using both references and imagination. That big fish is mostly from my imagination, combining from memory some of the features of a rooster fish with an angle that I wanted to try out. You can barely see my horizon line and vanishing point with some perspective lines traced on the paper; I am trying to work on this aspect of my craft. I am one of those people who would be a fine artist, I am sure, had I ever taken the time to buckle down and learn these basic principles and then PRACTICE them.


Ah, well. I am still alive and kicking, and I declare it is not too late for me. :P

Definitely not too late, and I think you're pretty much already there, anyway. ALL THE REST IS ICING.

Thanks. I see how you can think that from looking at stuff after I've tried to polish it or what have you, but I really have serious lacunes (is that a word in English?) in really basic construction/drafting skills. I get bored with the idea of nailing fundamentals (draw a cube, turn it on its axis and draw it again, repeat, repeat) but been to get over that and really do it. Because I do want to draw from imagination.

That picture book idea I shared with you demands it. When it comes to translating my ideas to picture form, then I really see that I am not up to snuff. :-/

I understand. I admire your art, but I know what you mean about having gaps--not that I see the gaps, but I can believe they're there--like if you couldn't draw cars, I wouldn't know because I've never seen you try, you know?--and I also understand both the urge to improve and the hurdle that doing boring stuff can present.

I guess I just don't want you to be too hard on yourself, and I want you to [be able to] keep enjoying making art. I believe you will definitely, definitely improve on the things you want to improve with, if you have a chance to practice.

Don't worry about me being too hard on myself. I, smug creature that I am, consider myself good at being honest about such things. ;)

As for the chance to practice, this is part of my getting up early routine. I need now to really focus on "useful and specific" exercises. Instead I go off on tangents.

If it's any comfort I once spoke to a pro, traditionally trained artist about drawing from imagination, and she said it was one of the things that comes to you really fast once you start practising.

You probably also have a lot of practise under belt already, just need to bring it out!
