Can someone please explain DW friends-locked posts to me?  I wish to talk about some stuff which is not for the general public.  I still have my friends filters showing up from my LJ days; however, I don't know if and how those have translated over.  I have not found a way of accessing them, just the "manage circles" page which seems very broad.

If you know more than I (not hard) and this makes sense to you, I would appreciate your help.

And related, how much do you trust locked entries?  Not being paranoid, but say, do you think gov'ts could access them easily if they wanted to?

I don't know if I understand it very well myself, but I think as for the crossover with LJ, if they're logged into their LJ accounts, then if it's a locked entry--which would mean you choose "Show this entry to: access list"--they can read it from LJ. As for friends who are friends on dreamwidth, they can read it if you've "granted them access."

Does that make sense?

Under the "show this entry to" drop-down menu, there's also the ability to create a custom group. So if you had something you wanted to share with some, but not all, friends, you could create a special group there.

No option to make a new one?

Let me try on my own account and report back.

OMG I think you're right.

I couldn't see a way to create a new one either!

That seems like a real coding flaw on DW's part!

Dreamwidth has split 'friends' into 'subscription' (stuff you read) and 'access' (who can read your posts).
You manage the access filters on their own page – https://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/circle/editfilters – and there you can create filters, and add people from what seems to be either the access list or both reading and access lists (I have a lot of lj folks turning up in that list; probably due to importing my livejournal entries).

The 'manage circle' page just seems to be the general access level from what I can see.

As for government access, I don't know. I no longer trust livejournal (which is why I no longer post there), and I don't know how long DW could hold out. Overall, i think they're fairly savvy folk who won't hand over your details at the first opportunity, but I'd retain a modicum of caution.

I'm thinking you need to look into access lists?

Maybe this is helpful?

Honestly, I'm a total newbie to the whole LJ/DW journal thing and really only know how to post and edit posts! Makes it a bit hard to continue using DW because I'm still trying to get used to it after years, but I like the way journals work here so I'm trying to stick it out. Hope you got your answer though!
