 I am living in a country that seems intent on becoming a totalitarian state...

Little by little; suppressed freedom by suppressed freedom; the malicious, oh-so-powerful use of fear-mongering.; the lack of care/implication and critical thinking on the part of the masses.  These are frightening times.

There are. In many countries who once thought themselves immune from such trash.

Yeah, our search for another "forever" home is proving to be a challenge

I'm sorry to hear that.

The search goes on! The main problem being that we feel we must flee this place to protect our young, which means abandoning our elders and fracturing family ties through sheer distance. Already, living 5.5hrs from the grandparents and other in-laws makes it hard to build relationships. The kiddos are basically maternal-relative orphans as it is.

Are you trying to leave France altogether? Or just the part you're currently living in? I mean, I've been reading about your problems with the school system so I know that's probably a big part of it.

If the law passes, altogether. It doesn't just target home education (and the status of families) it also impinges on freedom of religion and expression.
