Snippet - Keep it Loose

So, following my last entry on my expectations with myself and my art, here is what transpired after a hectic week of not feeling well, social obligations,* and a birthday.**
The theme, of which there is not truly one, is keeping it loose. That is not something I set out to do but something I keep reminding myself to come back to, and I see it in some pieces this week. This translates into an art style but also a mental space, a space I want to cultivate where I can strive to NOT be so uptight about the whole process (again, not just application of paint, per se, but in letting go of expectations and unwillingness to "just see what happens.")
Imaginary landscapes, applying leftover paint from the palette wet-in-wet and using a cut-up member card to for effects: rocks, grasses, stamping lines:

More experiments with dropping in a range of color and then using the card to create different types of vegetation:

Next up is a challenge set forth by Sprout: draw 4 different wolf coats/types using color. Gray wolf, arctic wolf cub, red wolf, followed by the loose attempt at a black wolf with watercolor:

While I may not have done many graphite composition studies, I did work on landscapes, as you can see with my final two snippets, a not-so-loose-but-getting-there small color study of the bridge I already did a pencil sketch of:

and a gouache painting on tinted paper of al-Barbara, where I started on location while J spearfished and the kids played with an abandoned puppy:***

___________
* We have our usual rounds of activities--gymnastics, family football (soccer), music lessons, playdates, church, Taekwondo, my mom's prayer group--to which we can add day-trips and socializing with friends new and old, some of the new being our downstairs neighbors: a widow and her 6-year-old son. Thanks to our friends from Egypt, we came into a ready-made community with connections to activities, and now we are able to pass along this knowledge to our neighbor who has lived here for years but had no idea the gym (where her son can do gymnastics and she can do Zumba) was near our apartment building.
** Ti'Loup turned 6 yesterday. :)
***Fishermen said she had been left there the day before, 6-8 month-old shepherd cross. Some young women took a pic of her and said they would tell the animal shelter and try to find her a home.

Date: 21 May 2022 01:24 pm (UTC)Your painting captures al-Barbara perfectly! I'm in awe! And I love your loose black wolf. I love all of these, honestly--I like you creating vegetation from the different shades of green; I like the bridge, even if you say it's not very loose, etc.
