With only two days left in the month, I figured it was time I checked in with Artober and my doings so related.

I drew steadily until the 19th when birthday preparations and shingle flare-ups dictated that I reduce all "non-vital" tasks to a minimum.

When I started to feel better and the birthdays were past, the desire to do the challenge just wasn't there. In fact, I was regretting my choice of challenge and wondered why I didn't pick something more in line with my goals.  The inertia was strong enough that I didn't resume the challenge  or revise it to suit me.  C'est la vie.

I did however, finish my book cover assignment, and that involved a lot of arting. :P   I also made good progress on my cardigan, even though I am still about 15 rows away from where I will have to start leaving space to insert the sleeves.  I worked a bit on my Dynamic Sketching, finishing up (at last!) the scorpions and doing a final drawing in the bug section of a spider, which led me into the part about "automobiles."  Less exciting than bugs, but still very useful.

My middle grade story that is a follow-up to the one I wrote in 2016 during NaNo also got some love from me this past month.  Since NaNo is right around the corner, my thoughts naturally turn to toying with signing up.  However, it will not get beyond toying.  I am going to be very busy and will be traveling for a week to a place I have wanted to go ever since I was a kid.  Stay tuned. ;)

In other news, we might be closer to getting a new flat and that has taken up a considerable amount of energy, albeit mental.  Our move date is still at the end of the year, but it would be nice to have something settled well before then, yeah?

I have been sketching everyday, just letting whatever I see and feel like capturing be my model for the day.  Most things aren't worth sharing, but sharing is not the point.  Doing is, and I am happy to be doing and learning.  Every stroke teaches something.

Here is my latest sketch, from our trip to Lake Chouwen:

Lake Chouwen - Artober 2022.jpeg

I got the bones in yesterday (with the wrong pencil.  Note to self:  Prefer a pencil with a wide lead/nib instead of a mechanical pencil) and tried to remember the shadows and dark values to put in today.  I could have done more, I see, but alas.  Not for today.

Hmmm, it's a bit scary typing up such a subject line, as if I'm defying life to throw me a curveball. :P

Anyhow, let me get in the good stuff before any such catastrophe careens my way.

I decided with our arrival back in Lebanon--still armed with those good intentions stirred by my illustration workshop--that I would revive my Bujo* and the use of a habit tracker.  I started on Monday rather on Oct. 1 since we had arrived home at 5 a.m. that day.  So, actually I have only been tracking things for two days.  Easy to get a gold star for that. :P

For Artober, I created a box to tick within my "Daily Doings" section.  In addition to that, in order to have deeper/more sustained creative practice each day, I've set up another section called "Project Tracker."  I put in several of the projects that are most on my mind these days, both writing only and writing+art.  The goal is NOT to tick off every project, every day.  Rather it will allow me to look back and see what projects got work that month, how often (I don't have a set amount to get done; a checkmark just means I looked and did *something* on the project), and which projects didn't get as much (any?) love.

Back to it...

* I really like having my monthly spread, BuJo style, to help me see, at a glance, what we got up to each month, but I am often pretty crap at keeping up with it.  I do a basic layout and mostly only use it as a planner, but as with blogging, I always enjoy looking back over it and seeing the meatier or more personal entries.  Such a good repository for my aging brain. :P Each time I pick it up again, I vow to do better.  I never do. ;) First time for everything, though.

After a lovely--but strangely surreal*--trip to our home in France, we are back in Lebanon.

Before leaving France, Farmer Boy asked, "Is it going to stink in Lebanon?"**
"Probably," I replied.

And yes, before we even landed, I caught the distinctive stench of sewage that festers in the Beirut air next to airport, mainly, I have been told, because there is a slaughterhouse over there.  But everything went smoothly at the airport, and our taxi was waiting for us as planned.  We had him drop us off at J's work so that we could pick up our car and scooter, so we had to reload the baggage into our vehicle and drive the rest of the way home with our less-than-stellar headlights (<--this applies to both car and scooter).  Despite the heat, the roads were wet going up the hill to our village.  A bad sign.  Sure enough, our first day back, we learned that all of our village was out of water and had to ration dishwashing, food-prep, showers, and toilet flushing accordingly.  (Situation was fixed today, appaprently, after 4 days of no water.   For the "no water" to have lasted 4 days means there was no incoming water for longer because our building is equipped with a 20,000L cistern.)

Only click if you don't mind a good ranting whinge )

In more upbeat news, I am going to do Artober, having been reminded of the challenge by [personal profile] green_knight 's entry on that subject.  I will draw something or someone from life every day for the month of October.  This entry is already long, so I won't share any sketches now.  Maybe I'll do a daily post, or if life gets away from me, a weekly one.  Anyone else joining the fun?

* In all our overseas living, we've never gone back to our own place for holidays.  It was a very bittersweet experience, finding home and garden, getting everything back into shape, all the while knowing we would have to leave it only two weeks later.  But it was excellent to potter around my garden again and tend my plants. :) I might do a post with some pics of our place so that I can revisit it in memory.

** When we got off the plane in Lyon, the kids inhaled and simultaneously exclaimed, "It smells like France."

*** There seems to be a new schedule for the power-cuts, which we have yet to pin down.
