The expo last night at the gendarmerie was pretty much a joke. The lady who "organized" it didn't really spread the word, and those who turned up were there for their regular Friday night gathering, not to see my wares. The organizer cut out after 10-15 minutes, leaving me on my own. Or I would have been on my own if I didn't happen to have an acquaintance among those present.

I didn't have the car and was only too happy when the time rolled around for Julien to retrieve me (2.5hrs later). I'm coming down with something--sore throat, (nausea and vertigo thrown in last night), sneezing, and congestion--so I needed my bed more than standing in a corner, vainly hoping more people would show up to make it worth my while.

I did sell three necklaces and a bracelet; the night was not a total wash. My major consolation is that I did not run myself ragged this week, preparing for the expo. It was as if some part of me was already knowing and accepting of the turnout.

Camerone, the French Foreign Legion carnival here in Mayotte, is over; alas, that does not mean I can rest. I have several custom orders to fill now, and I still have an expo to prepare for at the gendarmerie next Friday.* And my house. Oh my Lord, my house! I spent several years of my childhood growing up in a children's home, and one of my housemothers used to "tornado" rooms that didn't pass inspection. She'd empty drawers, pull off bedclothes and mattresses, yank clothes from hangers... My house looks like she came for a visit, only, instead of shorts, shirts, and sheets, there are bits of banana leaves, coconut fibers, drift wood, beads, wire, and hand tools scattered everywhere. :( So, yeah, no rest.

When I look at the success I've had with my crafting, I want to kick myself for not seriously starting earlier. So many people wanted to know where my "store" was and if I had a business card. And word of mouth would have worked fabulously for me because the island is so small, and everyone knows everyone. A lot of people came up to me and said, "Oh, you're Miquela. I've heard about the beautiful things you make!"

I've determined to continue once we move back to continental France, but the buying public will be so different that I don't think I can bank on having the same amount of success. I hope that I do, however; I have so many ideas that I'd like to make a reality.

As you can see from the following, I've followed my artistically bent heart and branched out a bit from jewelry making. Click photos to enlarge

Sold! to the lady who is probably my biggest patron (the one who hosted my first expo at her house and encouraged me to sell at Camerone). She's obviously a fan of what I do. :D

I hope no one buys this one, so we can take it home with us.

* remember this entry where I said I was going to take it easy after May 2? Yeah, guess the joke's on me. Yet another expo. Actually, this one was planned, but I hadn't heard confirmation, so I thought it might have been cancelled. No such *luck.*

Those seem to be my words of choice of late.

I want to blog about various things but find I don't have the time. The end of our stay in Mayotte is rapidly approaching. We asked to fly to Toulouse on August 4. That leaves us three and half months to do oh-so-much stuff.

Our eighth wedding anniversary is coming up, and I know J is planning a four-day surprise getaway (April 24-28). Then, on April 30 and May 1, I have a outdoor carnival to attend where I'll sell my jewelry and crafts. So, naturally, I'm spending every day creating. May 2nd is the market in Coconi, one of the busiest of the year. We'll be in Madagascar from May 14-June 4. The June market in Coconi is the 6th of June, and I should go to that one, too, because it will be my last here in Mayotte.

The July market will likely be slow, but more importantly, everything should be in a shipping container, on its way back to mainland France by then, leaving me with nothing on hand to sell.

Between all the crafting and traveling, we need to: get estimates for moving companies, pack, sell belongings and car, vaccinate animals, sell the boats, close the utilities, and I-can't-think-what-else. Oh, and I should write and crit.

I think I'm going to stop giving English lessons on May 13. That should free up a little time.

I haven't been around of late because I was preparing for that jewelry expo thing I believe I mentioned awhile back. It went really well, and I sold a few hundred euros worth of pieces, not to mentioned garnered another invite for the same type of event. So, lots of jewelry-making happening in the Faure household. Julien even helped me pierce seeds, and my neighbor, Mouniba, came over to sew little gift sacks to offer to my clients.

Because of the harry, hurry, and stress of preparing for the expo--and making special orders since then--I haven't been able to be as active as I wanted on the workshop. I did pass the 400-lifetime-crits mark about a week ago, though, so that's one goal met.

This week, things shall not slow down, for there is still jewelry to make, my house to clean for guests from The Old Continent, and my luggage to pack for Dubai (I'll be gone Saturday to Thursday). Not to mention my shopping list to finalize.  Ugh, shopping. My holiday isn't going to be very restful, I'm afraid.

No one fling that "rest for the wicked" saying at me, ok? I'm not *that* bad.

Sold!!!

I actually did it. I actually took photos of some of my necklaces (didn't get them all as the batteries in the camera died on me). Yeah, months and months after promising to do so, I know.  Anyhow, for [personal profile] frigg and  [profile] navicatwho asked to see them and anyone else who is interested, click on the photo to go to the gallery.

My friend Nuria is back from Spain, and yesty arvy, while J was out surfing, we spent a lovely couple of hours sipping tea and catching up.

I'm really happy about the way my summer went (finishing my ms, my art lessons, the jewelry making*, the boat outings) except where exercise is concerned. Now that Nuria has returned, we will get back into our walking schedule. In September, my writing hiatus will be over, and I get the feeling that I'm going to be a well-rounded person once more. And that's made possible because I either need a buddy or a goal, preferrably one that has external origins or ties.

~ For the art, I have Marcel and the lessons. Nothing like having a teacher to enforce discipline.
~ For the jewelry, I have the Christmas market to work towards. I know I need to do a few hours every day, either creating or preparing materials.
~ For the writing, I use [profile] novel_in_90or similiar "challenges" to motivate me when my will flags and I start making excuses.
~ And now, as I said, for the exercise, I have Nuria!

 * [profile] navicat I have five or six completed pieces now, so I'll upload some photos this arvy.

Haven't blogged in the past few days because it seems like not much is going on. Still, make the memories, Quela; make the memories.

So:
  • On Sunday we went to a cookout on the beach for Bruno (one of J's colleagues) and his family. I was my usual social self and within four minutes of arriving, I was off taking photos of interesting trees. I wandered back up the bank and socialized 192 pictures later when the camera started wigging out, as it is prone to do. After making small talk and munching for a bit, I wandered off again with my sketchpad and charcoals and drew. Didn't do anything special. Still just trying to loosen up and not get fussy with details right from the beginning.

  • After months and months of waiting and despair, we have a total of three "Golden Nugget" tomatoes ripening on the vine. That's three tomatoes for about 8 plants. Yeah, I'm excited. The cats killed the bell peppers, thyme, parsley, and lettuce. I need to replant, but there's always something else wanting my attention. I am an indifferent gardener.

  • Yesterday, while J worked on a video for Bruno, I made a necklace from seeds and seed pods. I think it turned out rather nice. I have had a DremeI for almost a year now and haven't gotten much use out of it because I started by trying to make shell jewelry (thick shells), and I broke a lot of bits.  Next I tried piercing some nice tumbled coral and unfortunately broke bits and coral.  I should've started with seeds first and I wouldn't have been so discouraged for so long. It helps, too, that I finally started using the drill stand that we bought about 3 months ago. Last night, I also chatted with [profile] rabiagaleand browsed around on Powell's, Loggia, and Amazon for art books and possible fantasy reads. If anyone has recs, I'm open to hearing them.

  • Today, I tried to put some organization into my beach finds. My bedroom door-as-table-as-atelier is still a mess, but I did get several seeds, shells, and pods sorted, sanded, and pierced. I reckon I'll continue cutting, drilling, and stringing things tomorrow. The devil's eyes don't smell too nice when I drill them, and I don't particularly care for the red (too orangey), but someone else might like them.  I mention this because I've decided to try to get enough jewelry together to rent a booth for the Christmas market. Can someone please hound me about that decision so I don't slack off?

  • I sketched out another art project idea tonight.  It is funny that now that I *want* to paint and am actually getting ideas, I don't want to begin because I would like to learn more from Marcel first. I know that one learns by practicing, but supplies are so expensive and hard to come by here that I don't want to indulge in experiments. Still, I could work on studies....

  • That coral scrape I got the other day was probably from an encounter with a stinging hydroid. The pain lasted for three days. Thankfully it is gone now, but I still have a "burn" mark on my arm.

  • A census taker stopped by our house today! We have contributed to stastics on Mayotte. Woot. I was just in the middle of making dessert, so J answered her questions. The first one was: Are you a polygamist? His answer: I would like to be, but my wife won't let me. :P She also asked if we had a boat and when J said yes, she followed up with, "Is it a pirogue with a motor?"  No. "So, it's a pirogue without a motor." Er, no... To which she looks at him in confusion and says, "But you said you had a boat."

Where else but Mayotte? :P
