The scanner cut off all the edges on this one, including the donkey's hooves; my paper is too large. But the hour is late and I don't want to photograph it.

So.  Since I disliked yesterday's donkey so much, what did I decide to do today's in? Pastels, a medium which you all now know I'm not at all comfortable with. Yeah, glutton for punishment.

Julien and I were talking last night about how difficult it is to post things I am unhappy with. With a few of these donkeys, I've wanted nothing more than to chuck them in the trash, but I've gone ahead and shared anyway. That is part of the challenge: getting over myself a bit.  And as I explained to J, even if I don't much care for the finished illustration, it is the experimenting, the working through something new and thus-far unthought of, that is more important to me right now than a pretty or well-executed work of art.

As I've read somewhere else, it is process not product.

Next time you come, I'll make you love pastels. :P

... and I haven't seen anything bad from you. This one has lovely vibrant colours (another reason to love pastels).

Yeah, why didn't we think of a pastel tutorial while we were at your house!?

I love the colors. And the donkey looks very soft.

I've loved all of them, so I'm glad you've been persuaded not to chuck them. Part of what I've loved is, indeed, the variety of media and styles you've experimented with--it's such a great range.

Love the colors in the foreground tree here.

I'm starting to try out a little bit of more cartoonish kinds of art, but it is really hard. I've always leaned more heavily to realism. Having read lots of children's books, I know that is all right, too; there is a terrific amount of diversity in allowed.

I actually had fun with the colors this time. Oil pastel is not my favorite, but it is still better than chalk pastel. :P

To me, this donkey looks young and somewhat unsure of himself. I very much like the colorful trees in the background, especially the one with the fan-like pale green leaves. Together, the trees lend the impression of a fantastical world full of possibilities.

The hint of fantasy was my favorite thing to put in there. :D
