Here are all of my donkeys, pinned and taped up together, in chronological order from top to bottom, left to right.

I should have waited until daytime to take a pic, but I'm impatient like that.

You can click the image for a bigger picture.

Since the whole point of this challenge is to choose an illustration style for a story I wrote for Julien, he gets final say on the styles I play with from here on out. However, if anyone wants to chuck their two cents into my cap, go for it. It will be interesting to see if tastes and opinions converge.

Yes, I'm still working on my donkeys. I've been blindsided, sideswiped, rear-ended, and run over by Fatigue, Personal Sick, and Family Sick, and so had no time or energy for art. I've been concentrating on writing since the beginning of the month, but I finally had the inspiration to do my "last" donkey.  Not last because I'm giving up but because I'm not going to experiment with other styles.*

Instead, the remaining 15 days** of my challenge will be spent developing 3-4 of my (and Julien's) favorites, so I can see how they look as more complete works. I'll also see if I enjoy the amount and type of effort involved.

But before that, I give you a donkey inspired by Madhubani (or Mithila) Indian folk art. The other day, I saw a couple of works in this style at an expo, and it reminded me that I wanted to try another folksy type donkey. I did this in sepia ink (forgot to change the settings and scanned it as a "Black & White Document"), but I haven't ruled out using color. I actually wanted to do it with illustration markers. Only I have no illustration markers and--see second sentence of this post--have not been out to buy any, despite my best intentions to the contrary.

My paper was too big for the scanner, but in my next post, you'll be able to see the edges.

Decided to pull out my drawing tablet* and play around with digital illustrating. I no longer have Photoshop, only PSE, now that I have a Mac, and despite being a stripped down version, PSE is different enough to what I'm used to that I feel like I've never used the program before. Not that I was a wiz with Photoshop, but I was semi-comfy.

Anyhow, this image felt very stale, and so I started playing with opacity and different brushes. Then it started popping a little more...and then too much. But by then, the "undo" button wasn't working any more. Oh well. Just sketches, Miq, these are just sketches.  :P

We've been having rolling blackouts almost every night, and because I can't seem to get my act together and do my illustrations during the day, I haven't had the will or energy to do them when the power finally comes back on. Good thing I am not doing a 30 Consecutive Days of Donkeys Challenge. :P

Tonight I decided to sketch by the light of a headlamp. The electricity came back just now, at 10 p.m., and I don't feel like doing another version.

My other art project isn't ready to share now, so back to donkeys it is.

I try to recycle whenever I can, and seeing the waste disposal problem here in Egypt, I try to find a second usage for almost everything.  We try not to buy heavily packaged things whenever we can avoid it, but sometimes we end up with things like styrofoam platters. I keep them for crafting with the Sprout, for paint palettes and such.

I used two of them to create these donkey stamps, which I tested on two different types of paper. I prefer the texture and effect of the first which was done on cheap paper. Since it doesn't have any tooth, it allowed the stamp to slide around in interesting ways.  However, I did have to apply paint twice on the second image because the first time, I didn't get good coverage (and it resulted in the blur-smudgy lines). Even from the first application of paint, though, I could see that the effect wasn't as nice.

The scanner cut off all the edges on this one, including the donkey's hooves; my paper is too large. But the hour is late and I don't want to photograph it.

So.  Since I disliked yesterday's donkey so much, what did I decide to do today's in? Pastels, a medium which you all now know I'm not at all comfortable with. Yeah, glutton for punishment.

Julien and I were talking last night about how difficult it is to post things I am unhappy with. With a few of these donkeys, I've wanted nothing more than to chuck them in the trash, but I've gone ahead and shared anyway. That is part of the challenge: getting over myself a bit.  And as I explained to J, even if I don't much care for the finished illustration, it is the experimenting, the working through something new and thus-far unthought of, that is more important to me right now than a pretty or well-executed work of art.

As I've read somewhere else, it is process not product.

Today's art was a mother and daughter affair. Please see note to self.

I'm playing with an idea of strong, dark lines (probably ink) on a painted background, but I'm not happy with my efforts so far.  This is definitely one of my least favorites. The donkey is stiff and not a part of the background. I didn't intend to color him in the way I did, though. See note to self.

And now the daughter part of the day.

Soëlie wanted to paint a donkey with me, so I drew her one. She specified, "A unicorn donkey." Behold:

Then she decided to draw her own.  "You see," she said. "I'm trying to draw its face. It's not facile!" I know, my dear, I know. It's not always easy.

Note(s) to self:  Doing art with the wee one is great, but keep in mind you will probably, at some point, have a child diving onto your lap. Trying to do line work is not advised. Also, wait until you get your drawing pens to do line work. The brush pen just can't cut it in all cases, and you'll only end up frustrated. Salt on watercolor is nice, but I'm not sure you should try applying ink over it. Something caused the ink to bleed, and I think that was it.
wayfaringwordhack: (critters: horse)
What is that saying about hell and good intentions? I think I added a few paving stones today. :P

Oh well, I did do the donkey part of my illustration. I just didn't get in the other details I wanted to include. You can see on the bottom that I was going to put in the eponymous slippers from the story (and the baby wearing them, too, which was visible before I cropped the image), but the day had other plans. Days of mine (yours, too?) have a way of taking over like that.

Now I intend to clean my paintbrushes and head to bed.  Will I make it or will the road to hell get a little free construction work?
wayfaringwordhack: (critters: horse)
Despite the simplicity of the design I came up with, my wrists weren't very happy with the papercutting. I wasn't thinking about my tendonitis but about my very dull cutter blade when I decided to keep my image simple, and I'm glad I didn't try for anything more delicate.

The logistics of where to cut and what to keep were quite entertaining, and I might like to try more of this technique.* However, I won't be doing so until I get the proper tools for it, including paper that lends itself to cleaner cutting that what I used.

Yet another long day. A get-together that was supposed to last 2.5 hrs tops ran to 5 hrs, so I felt a bit rushed with this one.  I wasn't even intending to do another watercolor today but didn't have time for my other idea. I also changed my mind midway through about how I wanted to do the sky, which resulted in a mess. Oh, well; it's a draft, just a draft. If I do go with fanciful, stylized imagery, I'm going to have to think long and hard about how much "busyness" I want and where I want said busyness.

It's funny. I wasn't intending to do a white donkey, but the trees (and the sky) got so busy (hence the busyness comment above) that I thought simple was the way to go with my donkey of the day.

7 White Donkey

"White Donkey," watercolor and ink* on matboard

* I used both india ink and white acrylic ink. The india ink bled into the board, but the acrylic stayed nicely on top. However, I did have to apply a couple of coats of white to get it more opaque.

Very tired. Long day.

Not much commentary on this one. I know I need more practice with watercolors, but practice is what I'll get if I do a whole book of illustrations with them. :P

Behold! A serious draft!

As you will have noticed, I haven't been worried about composition and such since embarking on this challenge, but I have tried to turn in "clean"(-ish) versions of my ideas. Not so today. You are getting a drawing with ink smudges and blah bits and all. And that's ok. This is very much a draft stage, and I need to get that through my head so that I'm not spending so much time on these illustrations.

I think to do an ink drawing justice and give it a chance to convince me, I should have paid more attention to composition, but doing the sketch on this buff paper lets me see that I would definitely want more touches of color, more in line with yesterday's offering. I seem to be leaning toward mixed media for the moment...

5 Poitou Donkey
"Poitou Donkey," ink on colored paper

As a former dreadlocked chica and soon-to-be-Frenchie, I have to have a Poitou donkey in the mix! However, this is not the right medium to do him justice. I may try another version later.

Today was a busy day and perhaps not the best moment to choose to do a digital collage, especially not when I have as hard a time doing art drafts as I do writing drafts.  I can't just do big strokes and leave it at that (I did put my foot down at adding details and textures...). But I'm learning. Boy, am I learning lots with this little project. That alone is quite fun.

One not-so-fun thing I've learned is that my scanner's color settings are waaaay off. Going to have to dig out the user's manual and see if I can tweak that.  The colors are not true to life, but that encouraged me to play more. And I learned that I have to spend more time familiarizing myself with Photoshop Elements to achieve the colors I want. In the meantime, this will do:

One of these days, I will learn to draw with pastels. It will not be during my donkey challenge, however. Back in 1998 (yes, I remember the date), I bought a set of chalk pastels without ever having tried my hand at them. Most of the pastel sticks are now broken but barely used. It is just not a medium I really enjoy. I don't even know if I could learn to like it. Maybe one of these days, I won't learn!

Nevertheless, I listened to some strange urge to dust them off and try them again for today's donkey.  I seriously almost threw my effort in the trash,* but this exercise is not about posting pretty (or even successful attempts at) art. It is about trying different things, seeing which ones fit...

So, goal accomplished.

3 Donkey Pastel

* Even doing pages and pages of collage** sounds more fun than doing pages and pages of pastels. See? I'm learning. And gaining perspective.

** Actually, it isn't the thought of doing one book of collage illustrations that bothers me; it is the thought that if I do decide to do more stories in this world, I would have to continue with a consistent look and feel. Doing books and books of collages...meh.
wayfaringwordhack: (art journal)
I learned something today.

I do not want to make a 32-page children's book full of collage illustrations. I started out with a plan to do a detailed scene of a little donkey in a field, but the fiddlesomeness of ripping the paper and fitting it and glueing it down just. so. got to me before I even finished with the donkey's head.

Yay! One type of media struck from my list. Unless I suddenly get the urge to fiddle with more recycled paper. :P

Once upon a time, I wrote down a children's story for J.

Once upon a time, I told him I would have that story illustrated by the end of 2012 (after promising spring of 2012 :-< ).

Time and again, I have failed to keep my promises because I have never hit upon an illustrative style that pleases me for the narrative. This is due to the fact that I have so far only done random little sketches.

Obviously it isn't by doing halfhearted once-in-a-while sketches that I am going to find a style that suits. Enter: 30 Days of Donkeys.  One of the first "images" that occurred to me in relation to this story was a donkey wearing mittens on its ears, so I am going to use Donkey as my muse. For the next 30 days, I will be doing one (or more if I have an idea that fires me up) donkey illustration per day in hopes that I shall, at last, home in on the type of art I want to do.

I'm in the middle of packing and cleaning for tomorrow's move (g'bye St Jean de Luz), but I want to post Sunday's snippet while it is still Sunday.  I worked on the children's book again this week and have even started a storyboard. I had a few illustration ideas, but having the storyboard layout, with the correct number of pages, has shown me that I need even more drawings than I thought...assuming they fit with the text layout.  Writing with pictures is technical and challenging in a way adult/non-illustrated fiction is not. :P

EEK! Forgot yesterday was Sunday.  Thanks [livejournal.com profile] mindseas for putting up your snippet and reminding me to post, albeit a day late. I have a good excuse for not being online yesterday, but that will be another post, perhaps tomorrow.

In the meantime, a snippet from what I've been working on this week. Not Witherwilds, but a children's story that I promised Julien I would finish before year's end.  I've got the story almost hammered out. Then it will be time for illustrations.
