I have done it!

I have FINALLLLLLLLY finished To Be Undone, a book idea that occurred to me when we still lived in Sancerre, before we ever went to live in Mayotte and I started Witherwilds.  I think, in fact, I started to get the idea for it before even finishing The Traveler's Daughter.   To Be Undone was to be the book I wrote for myself, not sharing chapters on the OWW or giving it to critters until I had written an entire draft.  The OWW taught me so much about writing, but it also taught it me that it was easy to fall into the trap of "writing for the crit."  I wanted to avoid that with To Be Undone.

I actually "finished" the book in Sancerre but the ending was a bit rushed, and I knew it needed a few more chapters to make it richer and more fulfilling.  Well, it has those chapters and a better ending now. We shall see if it is ready to transport readers.

I will be interested in getting that kind of feedback because I really don't think I accomplished one thing that I was aiming for. However, after thinking about it and struggling with it, I don't think the thing I wanted could have been done any more thoroughly without changing the story more too much.  So now it is what it is, and HOORAY! It is done.

For now. Like I said, let me revel in the feeling of writing THE END.

Or does she?

Goat is the name we gave our car that was stolen a year and a half ago. A few days before we left for our holiday, J was getting ready to throw away the key. "Wait," I said. "You never know."

J got a call today saying the police found Goat in Suez.

We don't know what condition the car is in, but it still has its diplomatic plates and these are what we need to hand over to customs when we leave the country in order to avoid heavy penalties.

Praise the Lord, whether she rides or not.

If she does, she just might come back to France with us, carrying all our boxes.

*cue Europe's song* (Oh 80's, what hilarious fashion you witnessed!)

In one year, we will be returning to Europe. This time, excepting any strange and totally unpredictable happening, we'll really be going back to France on 31 July 2017, give or take a day.

This coming year is going to zoom by. O.O

And these wee ones won't be so wee in another year's time.

Ti'Loup will probably even be walking by then, or swimming :P

We signed a rental contract today for a new apartment!

We can begin moving Nov 15 and will keep our current flat until Dec 1, so we'll be able to take our time with it.

The future flat is much smaller and a bit rundown, but! it has a garden!  WOOT!  I predict a much healthier, happier time here now that I'll be able to go barefoot on the grass every day.:D

And all for 100 LE cheaper than we are paying now.

One day, in the merry month of May, I was lying on my bed with Sprout, trying to get her to take a nap.  Out of the blue, she said, "I want a sister."  Then she turned and looked at me with a most earnest expression and declared, "I want my parents to make me a sister."

ExpandI have no idea where she learned that parents made babies... )

We have arrived in Cairo.  Tired, but safe and sound. I will take the time, probably tomorrow, to recount our exploits and excitement for the Egyptian adventure....

One month ago,* while grocery shopping in one of the biggest supermarkets in St Jean de Luz, my cellphone rings and the following conversation with J ensues:

J:  Hey, Quela, can you help me with something?  Can you tell me who sings this?  You probably know...

J plays this song:

M: Easy. That's "Walk Like an Egyptian" by the Bangles.
J: Do you ever walk like an Egyptian?
M: Sometimes. It's been awhile.
J: Would you like to do it in Cairo?
M:  Are you serious?**
J: Yes.
M: NO!?!
J: YES! We've been taken [for the next open embassy post there].  It's not 100% sure yet, but we are first in line!
M: When?
J: December.***
M:  Christmas in Cairo! Ok, get ready for it; I'm going to walk like an Egyptian in the supermarket.
M does the "sand dance" down the exotic foods aisle, with the Sprout looking on like her mom has lost it.

So, here we go: four years in Egypt. Very much looking forward to it. :D

* I didn't say anything earlier because with J's job, it is better to wait until things are more official.  We still don't have the plane tickets in hand, but things are looking great.

** I immediately knew what he was talking about because Egypt was our second choice for the embassies, Congo being first.

*** The departure date has now been moved up to 24 October, Julien's birthday, meaning that things are very serious indeed and I shouldn't have to post a retraction. :P
